wedding quilt spinning stars

Many thanks to the ladies who sewed sections.  This top for Austin and Nichole is really coming together.  Possibly even done before the shower March 12th!!  Let's all hold our breath--just kidding.

I have really enjoyed seeing the different ways this pattern can look.  Quilt group will be working on a few more variations this year.  If you want to get in on the fun let me know.  Quilting will be on 2nd and 4th Tuesday evenings starting around 6.00.,  Additional help/catch up/etc... will be Wednesday after Bible class (11:00 ish)

We will be working on 5 graduation quilts in March along with our first couple of steps in our personal Spinning Stars projects.  Fingers crossed we get our tops done to show off at the Ladies Night this Fall.

Spinning Star, die cut using scraps (works well with fat quarters)

Part way done!!

Had to show off, Sarah's king size top.  This is a Hole in the Barn Door variation using blues/light scraps.  Very proud that my daughter shares my love of sewing/quilting!

Wonky star part 2

I love raw-edge applique for adding words to my quilts.

"Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by."

Outer border is a work in progress- hope to show it off soon

borders borders border! Thanks GO dies

I have been having fun with the Chisel die.  I love that you get lefts and rights when you cut multiple layers.  I have an on going 'pile' that I am working my way through.

The majority of this top was made using all the same shape.  Even in a scrap quilt you can control several elements and get a great over all look.  For this one I used 4 same fabrics in each 'star' and used same orange triangles with each star.    The borders are made using both rights and lefts of the prints with random orange triangles.

This top was made awhile back up I 'found' the perfect material for the outer border (it was precut in a stash that was gifted to me- lol)  I did purchase $5. worth of black.  Almost all from stash.
I had two yards of this green with sunflowers on my shelf, Now half is on the quilt and the rest is going to get worked into another scrappy quilt!
I wanted to play with solids, I think I wanted to sew more then cut.  This will make a nice size baby quilt.  Next time I will power through and cut enough for a bed size.  I think I have a grand kid or two that would enjoy colorful and scrappy!

spinning stars for Tyler and Sarah

Another young couple from Church has set a date!  Our quilt group is busy making yet another future keepsake.

Congrats to the new couple who plan to exchange vows the end of July.

Spinning Stars was cut from Fat Quarters (thanks Quilt Makers Mag for such beautiful fabrics- being on the scrap squad has its perks)

Triangles and Sqs were die cut using the GO.  Sets were passed out to gals that wished to participate.

This top should be a bit larger but I misplaced a few blocks.  If found soon they will be worked into the back.

In the mean time, this center will get a couple of borders.  The bride to be likes yellow.

It has been fun working yellow into the top with out having it over rule the other materials.  I think we did a good job!

Large scrappy stars is quilted!

Our anniversary is in July. This quilt top was made a couple of years ago for our bed. It finally made it to the top of the Get-it -Done list.

I have my fingers crossed that I can get the binding finished soon.

Our daughter and her hubby (the elopers) are having a vow ceremony July 3rd at Jolly Mill.

They have the park reserved for the whole day. We plan to enjoy every minute with family and friends.

The grand kids are trying out the quilt to see if it will work as a picnic quilt. I think it passed!

This was constructed with 30 blocks measuring 21 1/2" set 5 x 6. I love scrappy and this was pulled entirely from stash.
Special Thanks to my friend Linda for helping make sets of fabrics for the blocks. (She did a good bit of the ironing for me too)

Another yard sale find- diamonds anyone?

I don't know if this one is so much of a 'find' as a rescue. I didn't get a before picture.
There were not additional fabrics to finish this top in the direction I thought the maker was going.

I remember this shade of blue from a few years back but didn't have enough in my stash to do any good.

Short version is I had to 're-do' a couple of stars. I took one completely out (couldn't be saved) and moved another to square up the sides.

I considered cutting off the points to give me straight edges. Instead I appliqued white borders on to try keep a usable size.

Now that I have it this far, what do you want to bet I FIND a blue sheet that matches. Not even going to try look for one. This future utility quilt is getting a white back and hand tied. (Just a bit to wiggly to machine quilt)

Not bad for $5.00 and a couple of hours of fix up.

SCRAPPY STARS

Hate to admit that this one is STILL not quilted. It was made to be our bed quilt. The top is 105" x 126". I have yet to take a good picture of it.

These shots are from my old blog.

If I remember, Erin started me thinking about this layout after she kept showing her progress. I decided to make my stars a bit smaller then hers and my setting strips are 2" to start with.

This top kinda grew on me. It was just so much fun seeing the stars come together that I just kept making a couple of more.

The star block are from stash that was irregular sizes. I started with 12 piles that were going to be blocks. I used a solid and two prints per pile. The solids were used either in the background, the star or the accent to the star.

The setting strips were from a sets of pre-cut 4" strips that I had left over from a 'cutting' stage.

I decided on a 12 1/2" star so the setting strips would work out. The 4" strips were sub-cut to 2". Then sewn into strip sets and cut at 12 1/2" The left overs were cut at 2" and worked into the 9-patches in the setting sqs.

Here is a picture of my fancy pattern!

The bordered star measured

about 21 1/2"

If I don't get around to quilting this in the next couple of years, I will take it apart and make smaller quilts from it. For some reason I just really seem to put off the BIG projects.

I have changed my mind several times on what I plan to use for the back. What ever I do it will be BIG and MINE.

Anniv. Quilt for 55th! Hope they like gold!

Linda finally pinned me down to start work on her parents anniv. quilt. The fabric was purchased months ago. The pattern was picked and changed several time. We decided on this star and to do it as a Big-Block Quilt.
I am a fan of taking a favorite block and super sizing it.
This is perfect for an 8 color project. In our case we didn't have enough of 3 of her fabrics to we added another three. (Eleven fabrics!)
This is on a 12 1/2" block for each block in the pattern. The easiest way to do a large quilt in my opinion. This beauty takes sixteen background blocks cut at 12 1/2" and sixteen background blocks cut at 14 1/2 (hey that's the size sqs I have- when the tri/sqs are re-sized I have strips for my strip box!!) Thirty two prints cut 14 1/2" and we were good to go.
I suggest making a "KEY" b/c it really helps in keeping the fabrics in order. I numbered mine 1-8 and on the three that were short, used an A & B.
Then go to town sewing the triangle/squares. I like the sew down both sides of the middle and cut apart and re-size method.

Here is a pile waiting to be re-sized.

These are the eight that ended up in the middle. I may never get such good points again! Must be because the quilt is not for me- lol

Linda is totally thrilled with our accomplishments. I think this is the best way ever to sew. Let your friend have a project in mind, buy the fabric, let you keep changing the patten, and then best of all, come over and wash dishes while you get to sew. (those that know me best, know I am always in the mood to help with your projects, especially if you pitch in on the housework- a total win-win.

Congrats to Linda's mom and dad on their 55th! I hope they enjoy this gift of love from their daughter. I also hope they have great cake at the reception! See ya on Saturday the 8th of August! Be good cw

Scrappy Stars by request for SAM-

Before you get excited, I mean the post about the scrappy stars is for you. The quilt is ALL MINE- baby!!
Glad you like it, I had a blast making it, just wish I could get a good picture, the colors are something to see.
Hoping to quilt it for our bed.
Don't look too close at the seams, remember I don't pin- my bad.

The stars are 12 /12" blocks and the setting strips are 3 x 2" WOF.
The blocks look smaller than they really are. After I get it quilted I will put it on the bed to get a picture of it. Love how it hangs over the sides!! Yeah finally a big, big quilt. 105 x 126 (ish)

Controlled Scrappy Stars---

Linda and I worked on getting this future wedding gift sewn together tonight.
I call it a controlled scrappy b/c it is mainly blues and lights (yellow, cream, tan).
The stars are 6 1/2" & 12 1/2" blocks. The solid prints are 6 1/2" There is no rhyme or reason to this top other than this is how many blocks were turned in.
I "cut" sets of 6 inches off a handful of blues and yellows. The other sewers from church added their own fabrics and made either the large or small blocks. Several did not get theirs turned back in (traveling to China for the birth of a grandchild is exempt).
On paper this should have been a larger top but in the spirit of making do......... this is what we got!

Amazing what a border will do to enlarge a top. 2 1/2 inner 4 1/2 middle 6 1/2 outer borders was an easy way to add 24 inches to this piece.
